The three ways to get a website
- Do it yourself with a website builder. The lowest cost up front: a monthly subscription plus your own time. Good if you enjoy it and your needs are simple. The hidden cost is your evenings, and a site that often never gets finished.
- Start from a template. Faster and cheaper than custom work. You fill in your details and photos. (Our template pack is $69.)
- Hire someone to build it. More up front, but you get a site planned around bringing in calls and bookings, and your time back. Prices vary widely between freelancers, small studios and big agencies.
What actually changes the price
- Number of pages. A one-page site costs less than a site with a page per service and per area.
- Features. Online booking, ordering, intake forms, a second language and payments each add work.
- Your industry. A law firm or dental office needs more pages, more careful wording and more trust signals than a salon.
- Writing and photos. Who writes the text and who provides the photos matters more than most people expect.
The monthly costs people forget
- Domain name: usually around $10–$25 a year.
- Hosting: where the site lives. Builders include it in the subscription; custom sites pay a host or a care plan.
- Updates and security: someone has to keep it secure, backed up and current.
- Changes: new prices, new hours, new photos. Ask who makes them and what it costs.
Red flags
- You don’t own the domain or the site, so leaving means starting over.
- “Guaranteed first page on Google.” Nobody can promise that.
- No price until after a long sales process.
- A pretty design with no clear way to call, book or order on a phone.
